The Chicago White Sox announced recently that they will listen to offers for anyone on their roster with the exception of pitcher Chris Sale and first baseman Paul Konerko. In a recent question and answer session with the fans, most indicated that any player would be fair game if led to a better team in the long run. So the Sportsbank takes a look at possible locations for players on the White Sox roster and offers names of possible prospects the White Sox could get in return. Your MLB trade rumors featuring the White Sox are right here!
Paul Konerko
New York Yankees, Texas Rangers
With both teams needing offense, Konerko would be a veteran presence who can play first base or DH. The White Sox have a trade history with both teams and despite his offense being down this year, Konerko’s historical performance could land a decent prospect in return. As Konerko is a cornerstone of the White Sox franchise and a chase towards 500 career HRs could help attendance through a rebuild, he would likely be the last player dealt.
Jake Peavy
Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants
A healthy Peavy would obviously be one of the White Sox largest bargaining chips. As he’s signed past this season at a reasonable rate, he becomes all the more attractive. The White Sox have a trading history with both the Diamondbacks and the Padres, from which they obtained him. The Giants reportedly had interest in Peavy towards the end of June.
Prospect names to watch: Giants (Joe Panik, Heath Hembree), Padres (Austin Hedges, Rymer Liriano), Diamondbacks (Tyler Skaggs, Archie Bradley, Adam Eaton).
Alex Rios
Texas Rangers, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants
Read Paul Konerko’s summary above. Alex Rios is having the best overall offensive season on the team and offers solid defense as well. A.J. Pierzynski allegedly told Alex Rios early this week the Rangers were looking for an outfielder and his name came up. The Yankees are almost always buyers at the trade deadline.
Prospect names to watch: Rangers (Mike Olt), Yankees (Gary Sanchez, Slade Heathcott, Mason Williams)
Jessie Crain, Matt Lindstrom, Matt Thornton, Addison Reed
Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves
Crain is having a monster season and all of the above players (except perhaps Thornton) can close ball games raising their value. While I’m not a fan of moving a young Addison Reed, if the Red Sox were to offer Jackie Bradley or Xander Bogaerts in return, you would have to listen. While the White Sox aren’t likely to trade with the Tigers you have to entertain all possibilities when you are re-building.
Prospect names to watch: Red Sox (Jackie Bradley, Xander Bogaerts), Detroit Tigers (Nick Castellanos, Bruce Rondon), Atlanta Braves (J.R. Graham, Matt Lipka)
Gordon Beckham
Oakland A’s, Kansas City Royals
Despite showing no power at the plate this year, Beckham is hitting over .300 and is much better defensively than he has shown to be since coming off the disabled list. He still has enough upside and team control remaining where he could snag a decent return as well. Both teams need second baseman and have trading history with the White Sox.
Prospect names to watch: Royals (Bubba Starling, Albaerto Mondesi) Athletics (Addison Russell, Matthew Olson)
Alexei Ramirez
Pittsburg Pirates
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the 2013 MLB season is the Pirates who need help at offense, yet don’t have many open spots on the roster aside from shortstop, where Clint Barmes is barely hitting .200. Alexei Ramirez would be an instant upgrade allowing Barmes to assume utility infielder duties. The Pirates farm system is also loaded with talent.
Prospect names to watch: Pirates (Jameson Tallion, Alen Hanson, Gregory Polanco)
John Danks
Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians
While the Orioles obtained Scott Feldman from the Chicago Cubs earlier today, they might not be done dealing and John Danks is a lefty pitcher with multiple years left on his contract, something that both the Indians and Orioles might find attractive. While John Danks is yet to show electric stuff since his return from shoulder surgery, he has proven to be a big game pitcher. Remember 2008?
Prospect names to watch: Orioles (Kevin Gausman, Jonathan Schoop, Nick Delmonico, Mike Wright)
Jeff Keppinger
Oakland A’s, Kansas City Royals
See Gordon Beckham above. Given his age, early season struggles and the two years remaining on his deal, it’s likely a Jeff Keppinger trade would be more of a salary, low level prospect haul.
San Francisco Giants, Texas Rangers
See Alex Rios above. This would also be more of a salary dump for the White Sox. While a trade to the Rangers wouldn’t be likely given Adam Dunn’s defensive liabilities in the outfield, a return to the National League could benefit Adam Dunn as would the opportunity to hit HRs into McCovey Cove. Don’t expect a top or even mid-tier prospect in return if the White Sox were to part ways with Dunn’s contract.
